Porangahau

A solar farm project is unway with the Ngāti Kere Hapū Authority, marae representatives and hapū members. In our first hui, whanau pointed out the sites where there were severe impacts on Porangahau by Cyclone Gabrielle. Manaaki Energy are working with whanau to build a solar farm on viable land with a view to power security and resilience.

In 2021 Manaaki installed solar panels on two of the homes in Porangahau beginning the relationship Manaaki Energy has with the people of Ngāti Kere.

The Manaaki team installed solar roof panels on the homes of both Kim Ropiha and her mother Marina Sciascia, and 73-year-old Koroua Denzel Hokianga. Matua Denzel shared his story about why his home was selected to be fitted with solar panels.

Every year Matua Denzel would disconnect his electricity for 6 months during winter when his shearing job ended rather than pay an expensive electricity bill.

None of our whanau should have to disconnect from power, and that’s why Manaaki Energy do what we do. We give the power back into the hand’s of our people.

A warm home, a hot kai, a long hot shower, connection to wi-fi and the ability to manaaki our whanau. That’s what Manaaki Energy is.
